Waco State Parks

Texas is rich in natural beauty and boasts 89 state parks, historic sites & natural areas across more than 640,000 acres. Of those, some of the very best are within a short drive of these Waco homes for sale. If you want your Texas lifestyle to have plenty of the great outdoors, our real estate agents know you won't be disappointed if you choose to call Central Texas home.

From fishing and hunting to hiking, horseback riding, birdwatching, and so much more, Texas has everything you could want in a natural landscape. Let's take a closer look at just a handful of the nearby state parks that make for a perfect day trip from your new Waco home:

  1. Mother Neff State Park – 1921 State Park Road #14, Moody, TX 76555
Mother Neff State Park is one of the crown jewels of the Texas state park system, and you can find it not far from Moody homes for sale, just southwest of Waco. Since 1921, Mother Neff has stood out as one of the original Texas state parks and is best known for hiking, camping, picnics, and geocaching. A brand new camping loop offers 20 full hookup sites for RVs, and there are also 15 tent camping sites, as well as group sites available for functions. Rangers and staff recommend making reservations ahead of your visit as the park often reaches capacity, especially in their busy season of spring, summer and fall. Entrance fees are minimal, and campsite rentals are extremely affordable.

  2. Meridian State Park – 173 Park Road #7, Meridian, TX 76665
Meridian State Park is the namesake park within a few miles of Meridian homes for sale. A great way to explore the Top of the Texas Hill Country and is nestled in a prime location among limestone bluffs. Centered along the 72 acres of Lake Meridian, it attracts anglers from all over the region. This vast park, offering 505 sprawling acres, is great for hiking, swimming, family (or company) picnics, and so much more. History buffs also love Meridian State Park thanks to the wealth of preserved, near-century-old structures.

  3. Lake Whitney State Park – 433 FM 1244, Whitney, TX 76692
If you are exploring Whitney homes for sale, don't miss the chance to drop by picturesque Lake Whitney State Park. Equally accessible from Dallas-Fort Worth or Waco, the clear water and an abundant collection of lakeside tent sites make this a choice destination for the whole family. Largemouth, striped, and white bass are waiting.

  4. Fort Parker State Park – 194 Park Road, Mexia, TX 76667
Fort Parker State Park is the #1 state park near Mexia homes for sale. As the meeting place of two distinctive ecosystems, this area on the banks of the Navastova River is unique in more ways than one. Swimming is permitted, along with fishing and paddling. Hiking, biking, and geocaching are also popular, make sure to check the park guidelines and stay tuned to alerts and notices for the most enjoyable visit. Fort Parker State Park has also been known to host large, private group gatherings, with a large barracks complex equipped with common areas, a dining hall, game rooms, and more, and able to accommodate 86 people.

  5. Dinosaur Valley State Park – 1629 Park Road 59, Glen Rose, TX 76043
Dinosaur Valley State Park lives up to the name and may well be kids' favorite state park just north of Walnut Springs homes for sale. The unique attraction here is the authentic dinosaur footprints, preserved in the mud for millions of years along the Paluxy River. Just about every outdoor activity you can name on water or land is accommodated somewhere in this park, and there is also a world-class interpretive center for educational programs.

There are plenty more state parks, and one of the best resources around is the Texas Parks and Wildlife website. Make sure to check it often to find out about special events and fun activities happening at the state parks around the state & to help plan your visits!

Along with fantastic state parks, Texas boasts incredible National Parks, some just a short drive from Waco and surrounding areas! What is the difference between a state park and a national park? Well, the governing bodies, for starters, as well as maintenance and amenities. Waco and surrounding areas also offer some beautiful municipal and urban parks, Cameron Park being one of the most well-known (and for good reason). To learn more about the impressive Cameron Park, check out one of our previous blog posts that goes over some of the great amenities found at the 2nd largest urban park in the United States.
